Google Services

In response to the May 2011 law relating to website privacy and the use of cookies this page explains how and why Pococks uses them and how a visitor to the Pococks website can control their use.

The Pococks website uses Google Analytics to gather non-personal information on our visitors in order to determine how many visits our website is receiving at any given time. This is done through the use of 'cookies' and code which is embedded on our web pages. If you wish to reject the cookies on our website, you will need to turn off cookies in your browser. You can find instructions on how to reject cookies in different browsers here. Please note that rejecting cookies may mean that some sites will not function correctly.

In addition to Google Analytics, we use a number of industry-standard ASP and Google services to provide particular pieces of website content. These include:

  • ASP:

The first time a user requests an .asp file within a given application, ASP generates a SessionID. A number produced by a complex algorithm, the SessionID uniquely identifies each users session. At the beginning of a new session, the server stores the Session ID in the users Web browser as a cookie. The SessionID cookie is similar to a locker key in that, as the user interacts with an application during a session, ASP can store information for the user in a "locker" on the server. The users SessionID cookie, transmitted in the HTTP request header, enables access to this information in the way that a locker key enables access to a lockers contents. Each time that ASP receives a request for a page, it checks the HTTP request header for a SessionID cookie. After storing the SessionID cookie in the users browser, ASP reuses the same cookie to track the session, even if the user requests another .asp file, or requests an .asp file running in other application. Likewise, if the user deliberately abandons or lets the session timeout, and then proceeds to request another .asp file, ASP begins a new session using the same cookie. The only time a user receives a new SessionID cookie is when the server administrator restarts the server, thus clearing the SessionID settings stored in memory, or the user restarts the Web browser. By reusing the SessionID cookie, ASP minimizes the number of cookies sent to the browser. Additionally, if you determine that your ASP application does not require session management, you can prevent ASP from tracking session and sending SessionID cookies to users.

    • Name: ASPSESSIONID Domain: www.pococks.co.uk Expires: This is a session cookie so it expires when the browsing session ends. What it does: asp session cookie
  • Google Fonts: We may use one or more of Google’s web fonts to ensure that our website content is displayed in a clear and consistent fashion across all of the different types of devices and browsers.
  • Google Maps: We may use the Google’s mapping services to provide dynamic geographic maps on our website
  • Google Recaptcha: We may use Google’s Recaptcha service (which provides the ‘I Am Not A Robot’ functionality) on our web contact forms. This is a security measure to prevent the abuse of our contact forms by automated programs.

Each of these services involve our website making a connection to one or more Google servers, and may result in Google placing cookies on your device.

Google's explanation of the Analytics service is as follows:

Google Analytics is a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. ("Google"). Google Analytics uses "cookies", which are text files placed on your computer, to help the website analyze how users use the site. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of the website, compiling reports on website activity for website operators and providing other services relating to website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google's behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google.
